Vodou Riche Exhibit – by Chad McGavok

When I stepped into this place called c-spaces i was immediately struck by the Alter; a multitude of gifts meant to be taken by the many demi-gods of the nation of haiti. I was then taken on a tour of what seemed to be a glimpse of the ever growing art world of haiti. I was amazed by the different pieces of art that seemed made of almost nothing. The junkyards that were made beautiful like the ugly duckling. There were also flags that appeared on the walls made entirely of beads which while impressive did not spark my interest as much as other pieces.

A little girl stood silently against a neutral grey wall, prying into your mind with a stare that matched yours. Her skin turned acid green from testing done for god knows how long. I almost felt bad for this girl who glared at me with such intense eyes. The glasses she wore on her face, thick black and without lenses only helped define her christmas red eyes. She was about four foot high and ready to take on the world. A soldiers helmet rested on top of spaghetti string black hair thinning out from the radiation of course. There was only one problem with this war gal, her vagina was well exposed and very furry. She is the god of love and she is in control. She is letting it be known that she will choose her lovers not the other way around. Which is usuallly the way it is shown with this particular god. The idea of the vagina hanging around is meant to be funny but in a way i think it is very symbolic. I think that it shows the strength of this woman and her bold sence for proudy displaying it. This piece is my favorite initially for it’s beatuiful color and creative force behind it. But more than that I feel it has a really great meaning and maybe even lack of meaning due to its humor.
